Taking a Break in New England

It is nearly dark here in Woodstock, Vermont, a favorite fall foliage leaf peeking paradise.

That is, this area of southern Vermont usually takes center stage among the places where October means glorious cascades of red, orange and yellow leaves in spectacular abundance everywhere you look.

But this season is exceptional, and the locals here are saying that the first frost — which is what turns green leaves into the fall colors— is more than a month late. The past several days have been rainy and chilly, with brief periods of sunshine.

Nonetheless, it's always a treat to visit New England, both for visiting friends and family and scouting for interesting and elegant and quirky treasures. I love the photos Daniel took along the way these past few days.

And yes, I found some marvelous treasures to bring home. Come by and see us at the store this Saturday for first dibs!

My Top 5 Favorites for this visit
• the short trail down to the base of the Quechee Gorge on Vermont Route 4
• dinner at Simon Pearce glassworks in the village of Quechee, and afterwards watching glassblowers at work downstairs
• strolling at dusk in the impeccably cute village of Woodstock, greeting the friendly residents out walking their dogs
• the view from the old cemetery in Peacham, often called "the most picturesque village in Vermont"
• the rainbow visible just briefly before dark on Saturday

If you're heading to the Northeast, be sure and check the foliage reports. You might catch the red splendor!
